BMW North America recently announced a recall of over 32,000 certain model year 2008 through 2011 lemon BMW vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall affects vehicles that have 8 or 12 cylinders including the BMW 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 7 Series, X5 and X6 sports utility vehicles.
The recall was announced due to a problem with the vehicles’ auxiliary water pump that helps to cool the turbocharger. In the potential lemon BMW cars, a circuit board for the electric auxiliary water pump can overheat, which can lead to a fire within the engine.
BMW has stated that in most cases, a warning indicator light will be illuminated when the problem presents itself. There have been over 100 reported cases of this issue to date and according to BMW, at least two of the reported cases involved engine compartment fires. Pursuant to the recall, BMW will replace the water pump for the affected vehicles.
If you own or lease a potential lemon BMW and you have presented your vehicle to an authorized BMW dealership for repair attempts with regard to the water pump, then you may be driving a lemon and you may be entitled to compensation.
