EVALUATION
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is currently investigating Volkswagen’s TDI clean-diesel engines for suspected fuel pump flaws.
The investigation includes Volkswagen’s model years 2009 and 2010 Jetta, Golf, and Audi A3 vehicles that have TDI clean-diesel engines. The investigation involves more than 97,000 potentially affected vehicles.
Regulators began the investigation after receiving reports of engines stalling and loss of power, some even at highway speeds. The NHTSA received reports of one accident and approximately 160 complaints from owners and Volkswagen about the engine problems.
The problems with the engines stalling and loss of power have been related to high-pressure pumps failing and contaminating the fuel system with debris. Approximately one-half of the stalling incidents occurred at highway speeds with no engine restart.
A recall has not yet been announced. However, a recall may be announced in the near future depending on the results of the NHTSA’s investigation.
If you are driving a 2009 or 2010 Volkswagen Jetta, Golf, or Audi A3 and you have experienced problems with your engine, you may have a lemon and you may be entitled to your money back or a new vehicle.
